It was a superb strike from Pedri inside the second half period that helped Barcelona overcome Sevilla in a 1-0 win at Camp Nou and maintain their La Liga championship aspirations.

Barca beat Sevilla 1-0 at home on Sunday, moving them up to second place in LaLiga ahead of their hosts.

"As for LaLiga, as long as it's mathematically possible, we will keep fighting," manager Xavi Hernandez said after the match. "We're going to try. It's unlikely that Madrid slip up so much, but we will give everything until the end."

Sevilla were a distant second throughout most of the game, but their resolve denied their opponents from scoring. While Barca had a 0-0 first half, they started to turn the field into their advantage during the second half of the game, generating opportunity after opportunity but coming up empty-handed.

Pedri's right foot scored the game-winning goal during the (72'min) to put the game away. In order to get the opposition to leave their feet, the 19-year-old midfielder pretended he was wearing two shorts. He then threaded a flawless 18-yard strike towards the far side of the pitch.

"The goal was similar to the one I scored in Turkey (against Galatasaray)," Pedri said. "I saw the leg coming so I feigned (the shot), and once I shot, I knew it was heading in."

Spanish national team player Pedri, displays a fine qualities which were likened with their new boss Xavi back when he was the captain of the Catalans.

"A supreme player. When I say that, I mean there aren't many people that understand how we play like he does," Xavi said. "And what a goal he scored. He makes the difference. It's spectacular watching him play, and he's only 19. There are no comparisons.

"I encourage him to shoot more, but he's a passer. He's thinking about the next pass, the final pass, the decisive pass. I was a little bit the same. He doesn't realise sometimes you have to try your luck, because he's got a good shot on him. And he scored a great goal today."

Their next game would be against the Germane club side Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League games on Thursday. Meanwhile back in Laliga, Sevilla will face Granada on Friday.
